Senior Acquisition and Sustainment Logistics Engineer (190701)

Position Summary: ILS is seeking an experienced engineer to apply systems engineering and integrated logistics support techniques for insight/oversight of life cycle systems, supportability and logistics engineering support for ground support equipment (GSE) and manufacturing, test, and support systems to support the NASA KSC Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) program.

Description of Duties  

  • Provide technical engineering support and logistics systems engineering support in a systems engineering and integration (SE&I) environment.  This position combines aspects of systems engineering, systems integration, and information management related to Ground Support Systems hardware and supportability requirements, technical interfaces & interdependencies.
  • Participate in working groups, design reviews, Technical Interchange Meetings (TIMs), technical performance meetings, teleconferences, other meetings, and document reviews as needed. This position will work closely with NASA Government counterparts, Government prime contractor personnel, and multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Support development and maintenance of Program-to-Program documents for critical EGS hardware, software, and data deliverables.
  • Assist with the development of technical status briefings for EGS Program reviews and mission milestones.
  • Update SharePoint databases and for interface-related changes, issues, and concerns.
  • Evaluate technical integration processes and identify candidate opportunities for process improvement.
  • Support engineering reviews and studies, review and analyze technical engineering data and drawings, develop and review engineering plans and procedures.  
  • Participate in technical review boards, risk management review boards, and technical interchange meetings.
  • Communicate and coordinate activities with NASA customers, decision makers, and supporting stakeholders.   
  • Use the Logistics Support Analyses for assigned systems and system design data (as required), understand the design solution in order to assure that commodity requirements, material requirements, unique personal protection needs, and chemicals and consumables are identified.  In addition, understand and assure that the program can accommodate any special shipping and handling needs that may exist. 
  • Analyze logistics data to understand system obsolescence, provisioning planning, hardware and consumable/soft goods needs, support and test equipment needs, and the associated supply chains.  Coordinate contractor Logistics to understand supportability challenges as they are identified.  Work with Logistics Contractor to determine steps to mitigate potential support issues and, where necessary, to communicate these challenges to the appropriate level of management.
  • Review logistics data to determine if logistics risks exist that would interfere with accomplishing system design, verification, validation, turnover and maintenance specifically in the areas of hardware obsolescence use or shelf life limitations, failure trends, and procurement/delivery planning.
  • Perform insight/oversight coordination with Project Elements and launch site Logistics and Operations stakeholders for supply support, specifically related to identification of common and unique materials needed for SLS vehicle launch processing.
  • Coordinate and support cross-program technical working groups to develop Interface Requirement Documents and Interface Control Documents.
  • This position is currently estimated to continue through Jan. 31, 2020 and may be extended to the end of Fiscal Year 2020.


 Desired Skills/Abilities/Certifications

  • Some experience in technical integration of aerospace or space systems or operations engineering during the design, development, test and evaluation (DDT&E) and operations phase, can be related to college projects
  • Experience reviewing, understanding, interpreting, assessing, and analyzing drawings or schematics
  • Understanding of factors such as mean time between failures (MTBF), mean time to failure (MTTF), mean time to repair (MTTR), and failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA)
  • Knowledge of how to perform tradeoffs in component/system design, repair capability, training, spares inventory methods, storage considerations, Item Unique Identification (IUID) for part marking, and transportation methods
  • Experience/knowledge of how to perform LSA/PSA
  • Understanding of how to interface with Program and Project Element level representatives as well as engineers and other technical personnel designing, developing, and delivering launch vehicles
  • Experience with or knowledge of ground operations and logistics for Expendable Launch Vehicle, Ground Support Equipment (GSE) requirements, implementation, and/or manufacturing, integration of payloads, space systems, and/or space programs highly desired
  • Knowledge of new NASA spacecraft, launch vehicles, space launch operations, and flow processes
  • Knowledge of or experience with Cradle, SharePoint, KDDMS, Maximo, Tech Doc, Visio and is desired.
